Thicker shells reduce copepod grazing on diatoms

چکیده

The diatom frustule provides partial protection against copepod grazing. Whether the defense is due to cells being de-selected or handled for so long that grazers lose time foraging unknown. mechanism has implications population dynamics of both defended and co-occurring, undefended nutrient competitors. We use video-observations demonstrate thick-shelled diatoms captured by Temora longicornis were rejected more frequently than thin-shelled diatoms, irrespective cell size. larger much longer, spent handling these limits consumption phytoplankton. This may be why many even in presence dense grazer populations, reach bloom concentrations, thus, facilitate aggregation mass sedimentation. carbon sequestration securing a large at depth ready colonize pelagic, when growth conditions again become favorable.

Effect of the Silica Content of Diatoms on Protozoan Grazing

This study examined the effect that silica content in diatom cells has on the behavior of protists. The diatoms Thalassiosira weissflogii and T. pseudonanawere cultured in high or low light conditions to achieve low and high silica contents, respectively. These cells were then fed to a heterotrophic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans and a ciliate Euplotes sp. in single and mixed diet experim...

Copepod grazing in the equatorial Pacific

The vertical distribution of copepod (>64 pm) grazing was mcasurcd on the equator at 14O”W during March/ April (19 d) and October 1992 (21 d). El NiAo conditions prevailed during the March/April time series. Hydrographic variables were similar to the climatological mean during the October time series.,We found higher weight-specific copepod filtration rates in October when mixed-layer temperatu...

Biosilica from Living Diatoms: Investigations on Biocompatibility of Bare and Chemically Modified Thalassiosira weissflogii Silica Shells

In the past decade, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with a large surface area and pore volume have attracted considerable attention for their application in drug delivery and biomedicine. Here we propose biosilica from diatoms as an alternative source of mesoporous materials in the field of multifunctional supports for cell growth: the biosilica surfaces were chemically modified by tradi...

A Thicker Regolith on Mercury

The scale-dependence of roughness contrasts, and the morphology of small craters in smooth plains suggest that regolith on Mercury is thicker than on the Moon. Introduction: The surface of the Moon is covered with a layer of regolith, fragmental, highly heterogeneous material. Formation, modification and transport of the regolith occur due to meteoritic and micrometeoritic impacts and a number ...
